Rothko's #14
Few artists respected their art more than Rothko. In 1958, the Four Season hotel in NY offered him a grand commission of $2.5M for a couple of his large canvases. But Rothko was skeptical, worrying that the Four Season's upscale clientele would never understand the message behind his art. (Philistines be damned!)
He initially accepted their commission, but later refused to hang his works in Four Season. Can anyone recall another instance when art triumphed over money? (Damien Hirst, ahem).
