The penultimate post

Oddly enough, wedding planning (re)-piqued my interest in design and architecture.   As any design-savvy New Yorker can tell you, there are enough Delano & Aldrich and McKim Meade & White designed spaces on the tiny island of Manhattan and its immediate environs to make your head spin with all of the exquisite choices.  There are lots of great event spaces not designed by the aforementioned, but I am a girl who loves gravitas, especially for THE BIG DAY.  I shall delve into my other choices later, as they're all private spaces which haven't made it through the rounds on the blogosphere... yet, but are definitely worth checking out.

Above are the herringbone floors where I had my first dance as a newly-minted-Mrs.  This palatial home was built as a wedding present for Cornelius Vanderbilt's granddaughter, Margaret Vanderbilt, in 1893, overlooking the Hudson River in, Westchester County, NY.  The plans were by Stanford White of McKim, Meade & White, and constituted one of the last works of the famous architect.  In 1911 the palladian style home became a country club, and the rest is history!
